For the proband/target and other individuals in the family history that are marked as alive, the age and year of birth are automatically synchronised by default. In the 'Personal Details' section of the CanRisk tool when the date of birth is entered the age is automatically assigned. For other family members, added in the 'Family History' section, when an age is added the year of birth is synchronised and vice versa. There are scenarios when the synchronisation of the age and year of birth fields may not be desirable, e.g. when reproducing cancer risk calculations retrospectively.

How to disable age/year of birth synchronisation

Synchronisation can be disabled in the 'Preferences'. Click the 'Preferences' button at the top of the CanRisk tool page to open the user preferences. Under the 'Advanced Options' there is an checkbox to 'Disable age and year of birth synchronisation'. For all subsequent risk calculations this allows for these values to be overridden as explained below.

With synchronisation disabled, on entering the proband's date of birth their age is still automatically given. However it is now possible to click on the age and change it. You will see a warning message to indicate this is not their current age.

Editing the proband's age in the 'Personal Details' section

i) year of birth enteredii) age edited

In the 'Individual's Details' panel (under the 'Family History' section) clicking on the lock symbol, between the 'Age' and 'Year of birth' input fields will unlock them and disable synchronisation of these for that family member.

Editing a family members age and year of birth fields in the 'Individual's Details' Panel. Clicking on the 'lock'/'unlock' symbols toggles between synchronisation on and off when entering values for these fields.

i) 'locked'/synchronisation on
ii) 'unlocked'/synchronisation off
