In the CanRisk Tool, when a family member is marked as alive, that person's age and year of birth are automatically synchronised by default.

For example, when you specify the proband's date of birth in the 'Personal Details' section, the

the

proband's age is automatically assigned. Similarly, when you are adding relatives in the 'Family History' section and you specify an age, the corresponding year of birth is automatically assigned too (and vice versa).

However, there are scenarios when the synchronisation of the age and year of birth fields may not be desirable, e.g. when reproducing cancer risk calculations retrospectively.

How to disable age/year of birth synchronisation

Synchronisation can be disabled in the user preferences menu. Click the 'Preferences' button at the top of the CanRisk Tool to open this menu. Then, under 'Advanced Options' , select the checkbox to 'Disable age and year of birth synchronisation'. This allows the synchronised values to be overriden as explained below.

When synchronisation is disabled, you can specify the proband's date of birth, and the corresponding age will still be automatically assigned. However it will then be possible to click on the age and change it. Then if you do change it, you will see a warning message (shown in red below) to indicate that this is not the person's current age.

Similarly, when you are adding relatives in the 'Family History' section, if you click on the lock symbol in the Individual's Details' panel (see below), then this will unlock the 'Age' and 'Year of birth' fields and disable the synchronisation between them for that family member.
